Zero emission zones

On 1 January 2028, Almere will induct 3 zero emission zones (ZE-zones) in the centres of Almere Stad, Almere Haven and Almere Buiten. These zones will provide a healthier, cleaner and more pleasant living environment.

What is a zero emission zone?

A zero emission zone (ZE-zone) concerns delivery vans and lorries. These vehicles can only enter these areas if they do not emit harmful emissions (such as CO2). Think of electric vehicles or hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Difference environmental zone

An environmental zone is something different from a zero emission zone. This zone restricts entrance to highly polluting vehicles, such as vehicles with old diesel engines. The rules in an environmental zone apply to all vehicles. A zero emission zone only applies to delivery vans and lorries.

Where and when in Almere?

  • Start date: 1 January 2028
  • Locations: centres of Almere Stad, Almere Haven and Almere Buiten
  • Transitional period: until the end of 2029, a transitional arrangement will be in effect
  • Please note: other cities have already begun since 1 January 2025

Please visit doehetzero.nl or opwegnaarzes.nl for an up-to-date overview of all the ZE-zones in the Netherlands.

Who will be impacted by this?

Do you drive a delivery van or a lorry to the centres of Almere Stad, Almere Haven and Almere Buiten? Then you will have to deal with the ZE-zones come 1 January 2028. It is important that you already prepare yourself for this measure. Check your licence plate on opwegnaarzes.nl to find out if your vehicle will still be allowed entry into these urban centres.

Exemptions and dispensations

Some vehicles may temporarily use the ZE-zones. These are:

  • Truck-mounted cranes and other special vehicles (permission applies to all of the Netherlands)
  • During special circumstances (local exemptions)

An overview of all the exemptions and dispensations can be found on opwegnaarzes.nl.

You can apply for exemptions online on the RDW website.
