In the Netherlands it is forbidden to use asbestos. You may also not process it, such as sanding, sawing or drilling. There is 1 exception: private individuals are allowed to remove 'bonded asbestos' themselves under certain conditions, but only after a demolition notification.
You may only remove asbestos yourself onder very strict conditions. You will also have to submit a demolition notice. Read here for more information on removing asbestos by private individuals (in Dutch).
Currently, asbestos roofs are the greatest source of asbestos fibres in the environment. This is also the case in Almere. Asbestos roofs are exposed to the elements and are subject to wear and tear from the sun, rain and frost. Through this wear and tear, loose asbestos fibres are released into the environment.
It is becoming increasingly difficult to insure asbestos roofs and it may become compulsory to remove them. Therefore, it is advisable to replace an asbestos roof as quickly as possible.
From 1 March 2024, the Almere Municipality will help people with an asbestos roof on their home. If you have your own house with an asbestos roof, you can receive a subsidy to replace it with a better insulated roof. There are about 100 homes with an asbestos roof in Almere. Read the conditions and apply for the grant (in Dutch).
In February 2025, the subsidy for the replacement of your shed or garage roof will begin. There are about 1,000 shed or garage roofs with asbestos in Almere. With this subsidy, residents can replace these roofs free of charge and without administrative hurdles.
The municipality does not only offer subsidies, but also aid with the process to make sure you do not have to go at it alone. This is called process consultancy.
