Marriage and partnership

Do you want to get married or enter into a registered partnership? Then you must first notify us of your intended marriage or registered partnership. Make sure to notify us a minimum of 4 weeks and a maximum of 1 year before the date of the ceremony. For the ceremony, you can choose between comprehensive, simple and free.

In March, April and May 2025 we will run a trial. Adjusted days and times apply for a simple ceremony. We will also begin with a new type of ceremony: the baliehuwelijk (reception wedding).

Simple ceremonies are on:

  • Monday between 10:00 and 12:00 o'clock
  • Tuesday between 14:00 and 16:00 o'clock
  • Wednesday between 10:00 and 12:00 o'clock

A reception wedding takes place at the reception of Burgerzaken (Civil Affairs). Only the wedding couple and witnesses will be present. There is no exchanging of rings and it is not possible to take pictures at the reception. The ceremony lasts a maximum of 15 minutes.

Reception weddings are on:

  • Monday between 13:00 and 14:00 o'clock
  • Wednesday between 9:00 and 10:00 o'clock

  • Identity and contact details of yourself and your partner.
  • Identity details of the witnesses.
  • A valid travel document of you and/or your partner if you and/or your partner are not Dutch nationals.
  • Details of a prior wedding/registered partnership if you and/or your partner have been married or have been in a registered partnership before.

After your notification

After sending the form, we will check to see if all the details were filled correctly. We will also look if you are allowed to marry one another or if you are allowed to enter a registered partnership together. We will do our best to call you within 4 weeks. During this phone call, we will discuss which date you wish to marry or enter a registered partnership. We will also ask for details and documents if necessary.

Afterwards, we will make an appointment at city hall where you both have to be present. At this appointment, we will check your identity, set the date for the wedding or registered partnership, and you will pay the costs. Make sure to bring a valid proof of identity and a payment card with you for the appointment. During this appointment, you will also receive the approval of the ceremony. If you chose a free ceremony and want no wedding registry or partnership registry, then we will call you and send the confirmation by email.

Are the details of your parents or your birth certificate not registered? Then make an appointment with the municipality that you are registered in so that you can register these details in the BRP. Are you registered in Almere? Then make an appointment by calling 14 036.

Do both of you live abroad and is 1 of you a Dutch national? Then register your marriage or partnership in the Den Haag (the Hague) Municipality.

The Den Haag Municipality will send your details after your notification to the Almere Municipality. We will contact you when we receive your details.

Conditions ceremony at a different venue

You can marry anywhere in Almere. You could marry at restaurants, bars and conference centres. You can also marry at home, in your own backyard. The venue does have to meet certain conditions:

  • The venue has to be within the borders of the municipality.
  • The address has to be in the cadastre.
  • The venue has to be open to the public and freely accessible to everyone.
  • The venue cannot cause public disruption.
  • The venue has to be decent and respectful to the public. De plek past bij wat mensen fatsoenlijk en respectvol vinden.
  • The owner of the venue has to give his permission beforehand in writing.
  • The wedding officiant has to be able to perform their work safely.
  • If you want to hold a wedding in a catering facility (for example a bar or a restaurant), then you will need to be able to provide a recent statement from the fire department or an audit report/licence for fire safety requirements.
  • If you want to have your ceremony in a place of worship, like a church or a mosque, then the civil marriage has to take place before the religious marriage. It is not allowed to combine them in 1 ceremony.
  • The venue has to have a covered and enclosed space.

These are the following requirements for marrying at home:

  • The venue has to be fireproof.
  • The owners and the future couple are responsible for everyone’s safety and will ensure that the home residence is accessible to everyone.

It is possible that you will need to make a request for an event permit for your ceremony outside of city hall. A ceremony outside of city hall costs the same as a comprehensive ceremony.

Interpreter at the ceremony

The ceremony is in Dutch or English. Do you, your partner, or your witnesses not speak these languages? Then we will ask you to arrange for a licensed interpreter at the ceremony.

You can find a licensed interpreter on the website of Raad voor Rechtsbijstand (in Dutch). The wedding cannot go on without an interpreter. Translation by a family member or friend is not permitted.

Difference marriage or registered partnership

In the Netherlands you can choose between marriage or registered partnership. The rights and duties of a marriage or partnership are almost identical. The terms, requirements, and documents that you need are the same. The most important differences between a marriage and partnership are:

  • At a wedding you have to say “I do”. With a registered partnership, this is not required.
  • A partnership does not have to be terminated by a judge if you do not have children under the age of 18-years-old. A marriage will always have to be terminated by a judge.
  • Not all countries recognise a partnership. Do you have plans to (temporarily) live abroad? Ask the embassy or consulate of the country where you are going to if they accept a registered partnership.
  • Whether you are going to get married or enter a partnership, you have rights and duties towards each other after the ceremony. You may use each other’s surname, you promise to take care of each other and that you are each other’s legal heir.

Community property or prenuptial agreements

If you get married or enter a registered partnership, you will automatically enter a community property or prenuptial agreements.

Herein are covered:

  • All your possessions and debts that were you and your partner’s before marriage or registered partnership
  • All your possessions and debts that you and your partner have after marriage or registered partnership.

The possessions and debts that are only yours (or your partner’s) before marriage or registered partnership do not fall under the community of property or prenuptial agreements.

Would you like to keep your possessions and debts separate? Then you can arrange the community property or prenuptial agreements with your notary.
