Birth of a stillborn child

A child dying before or during birth is a major, sad event. We will try to help you in any way we can with the registration of your deceased child. You can make an appointment online to report this and make the decision to include your child in the Personal Records Database (PRD). The funeral director can do this on your behalf.

The civil registrar will draw up a birth certificate during the appointment.

What to bring along to your appointment

  • Valid proof of your identity
  • Statement from the doctor showing you gave birth to a stillborn child (A statement)
  • Cause of death statement (B statement)
  • Extract or copy of the acknowledgement certificate (if you have one)
  • Copy of the choice of name certificate (if you have one)

Registering your child in the Personal Records Database (PRD)

If you gave birth to a deceased child some time ago, you will still have the option of adding your child’s details afterwards. The Personal Records Database (PRD) is called Basisregistratie Personen (BRP) in Dutch.

Please bring the following to your appointment:

  • Copy of the birth certificate
  • Valid proof of your identity
  • Your marriage certificate or partnership booklet, if you want to register your child in the booklet

Burial or cremation

If you wish to bury or cremate your child, you will need permission (licence) from the municipal government. You will receive this licence immediately with the registration of the birth of your child in Almere. If the pregnancy was shorter than 24 weeks, then permission is not obligatory by law.

Vlinderveld Almere

Vlinderveld in Almere is a cemetery for children that were born before the 24th week of pregnancy. You can read more information about the Vlinderveld cemetery
