The Almere Municipality aims to replace all asbestos roofs in 2026. We help residents do this through a subsidy.
There are around 1,000 asbestos shed and garage roofs in Almere. The older the roof is, the more asbestos fibres are released into the air. This poses a risk to your health. Because of this, Almere aims to replace all asbestos roofs in 2026.
It is the owner's responsibility to remove an asbestos roof. The municipality wants to help residents with this. Together with contractor Haaxman Milieutechniek BV, the municipality will take care that asbestos shed and garage roofs will be replaced by a comparable new roof. The contractor takes care of the removal and replacement of the roof. This is all free of charge for the resident.
This arrangement does not cover the replacement of house roofs. For asbestos house roofs, we offer a different subsidy. For more information on the subsidy for an asbestos house roof and how to apply for it, please visit almere.nl/bouwen.
We have a temporary subsidy available for this project. The project will be will be implemented from 18 March 2025 until 2026, or until the budget runs out. You do not have to apply for a subsidy yourself for the removal of a shed or garage roof. The contractor will, however, ask for written permission from the homeowner to replace the asbestos roof.
The addresses where there is a suspected asbestos shed or garage roof will automatically be contacted by the municipality, and be visited by the contractor. In 2019 there was a scan to look where these asbestos roofs were located. It is possible that the roof has already been replaced since then. You can only join in if the roof has not yet been replaced. Rehabilitation of the roofs will be handled one neighbourhood at a time in 2025 or 2026.
Would you prefer to make an appointment yourself? Can you no longer wait because there is leakage, or do you have another question? Then contact the contractor by email asbestdaken or make an appointment at @haaxmanprojecten.nlhaaxmanprojecten.nl/asbestdaken.
According to a scan from 2019, Almere has around 1,000 small asbestos roofs. The municipality has made subsidy money available for the number of asbestos roofs from the scan. We expect to have enough resources for all shed and garage roofs, but one must always keep unforeseen consequences in mind.
Housing associations can also access the subsidy. Are you renting a house from a housing association? Make sure to send the letter to your housing association, so that they can register the asbestos roof or contact the contractor. The municipality is also in contact with multiple housing associations.
The work to remove your shed roof takes on average 1 day and you do not need to be home for this work. Before the work begins, the contractor will ask for written permission of the homeowner to replace the asbestos roof. The work is scheduled with the resident.
Sanitising your roof includes the following services:
After the asbestos roof has been replaced, the contractor will ask you to sign a delivery form. The contractor needs this form to invoice the municipality.
If you do not participate, the asbestos roof will remain untouched. This creates a health risk as more asbestos fibres are released over time. Asbestos roofs are the largest remaining source of asbestos fibres in the environment. This is also the case for Almere. In the future, it may become mandatory to replace the asbestos roof, for example, if a roof is outdated.
The subsidy is temporarily available. By participating now, you choose for a safer roof, for the roof replaced free of charge and you contribute to a cleaner and healthier living environment.
