What is preschool?

Preschool is a child care with a PE: Preschool Education (voorschoolse educatie). PE (VE indicatie) is a special play-and-learn programme for toddlers.

In a safe environment, toddlers are given space to play under supervision and develop themselves. They are challenged by playing and by making use of various activities. Here they also gain all sorts of new experiences. By playing with each other, toddlers discover the world. Preschool prepares toddlers for primary school. This is done in a way that fits the development of your child best.

With and without PE-indication

Preschool is for all toddlers. Toddlers that risk running an educational disadvantage, for example, with language, can receive a PE-indication (VE-indicatie). The PE-indication is advice to parents to sign up their child to preschool. Would you like to know if your child needs a PE-indication? Then you can contact the consultatiebureau (consultative office).

Experiences of different professionals

Julie, teacher:
“The transition to primary school runs much more smoothly for children who have attended a preschool. Not only are they used to participating in group activities, but they are also well-experienced in a school setting. Moreover, and more significantly, they will have learnt skills at preschool that will be important for when they go to primary school.”

Mona, childcare worker:
“We work with children in a group where we help their development and stimulate them to learn new things. Because of this, children gain more confidence and are more comfortable to let themselves be heard, also in interactions with different kids. One important aspect is that your child will be part of a group, but there is also ample space to offer more attention to your child in smaller groups or on an individual basis – whatever best suits the individual needs of the child. The transition to primary school is also far smoother, because so much work has already been done in the areas of developing language, arithmetic, motor skills and social-emotional skills.”
