Asbestos

In the Netherlands it is forbidden to use asbestos. You may also not process it, such as sanding, sawing or drilling. There is 1 exception: private individuals are allowed to remove 'bonded asbestos' themselves under certain conditions, but only after a demolition notification.

Asbestos is a hazardous substance. Inhalation can cause serious health problems, such as cancer. Asbestos was popular because it was strong, insulating and cheap. Because of this, it was widely used as a building material. Slowly it became clear that asbestos is bad for your health. That is why building with asbestos has been banned in the Netherlands since 1993.

Removing asbestos residential roofs

From 1 March 2024, the Almere Municipality will help people with an asbestos roof on their home. If you have your own house with an asbestos roof, you can receive a subsidy to replace it with a better insulated roof. There are about 100 homes with an asbestos roof in Almere. Read the conditions and apply for the grant (in Dutch).

Replacing asbestos shed and garage roofs

In February 2025, the subsidy for the replacement of your shed or garage roof will begin. There are about 1,000 shed or garage roofs with asbestos in Almere. With this subsidy, residents can replace these roofs free of charge and without administrative hurdles.

Process consultancy

The municipality does not only offer subsidies, but also aid with the process to make sure you do not have to go at it alone. This is called process consultancy. The municipality has already begun with this in Kruidenwijk and in October 2024, we will also begin in Almere Haven.

In Almere, the process consultant is René Mulder. He offers the following services:

You can contact René Mulder by calling 06 - 463 463 36 or by writing an email to almeregeeftenergie@almere.nl.
